Four things worth doing first
Know which laws apply to you
Most states and territories apply the model WHS laws, but Victoria runs its own OHS Act and Western Australia has its own WHS Act with separate mining arrangements. Start with the regulator for the state the work happens in.
Write down the risks you already know about
A risk register does not need software. A simple list of your significant hazards, current controls and who is responsible is more useful than a template you have not read.
Check your documents match your work
If your procedures describe equipment you no longer use or roles nobody holds, they will not survive an audit and your crews will ignore them.
Make consultation visible
Consultation with workers is a legal duty, not a courtesy. Toolbox records, meeting notes and how you respond to raised issues are the evidence that it happened.

Signs your safety system needs a review
- A client or tender has asked for evidence you cannot produce
- Your documents were written by someone who has since left
- An incident or near miss was not investigated properly
- Your work has changed but your procedures have not
- Nobody can name who holds a specific safety responsibility
